Dr. Gargi Roy Goswami – A Dental Geneticist breaking stereotypes and crossing boundaries to navigate unknown territories

1Can you start by taking us back to your early education days? How did you join BDS, and how was the BDS journey for you?

My early education started with a UG in Biochemistry and molecular biology, PG in Applied Genetics and finally into a research career in oral cancer genetics at JNU and IIT Kaharagpur.

BDS was an interesting journey for me. Though I played around with oral squamous carcinoma cells on a daily basis, BDS provided me with the first opportunity to look into oral cancer with my own eyes, away from the microscope!

2Take us through your career path after BDS?

I am a geneticist turned dentist turned edupreneur. During my BDS and internship days, I had several experiences which led me to think about bringing dental genetics to the forefront and creating awareness about it in the fraternity.

3How did you reach the point where you are today?

To take a bold stride forward, I started my educational drive through Indian Academy for Clinical And Dental Genetics from 2016 onwards.

4What are the highest points/peaks so far in your career?

1. Incepting my company dedicated to my Dad - DR KAMALESH ROY RESEARCH AND DIAGNOSTICS PRIVATE Ltd. - popularly called as KROYNAS
2. Pioneering International Saliva Summit in India from 2019
3. Launching Fellowship in Dental Genetics online course after a background work of 3 years.
4. Publishing my first book on Covid 19 Detection Strategies - Swab to Saliva

5What are the roadblocks/challenges or hardships faced? How did you overcome them?

I personally think "roadblocks" and " challenges" are just perspectives that we perceive for any situation in life. So I really don't have one!

For me each step into entrepreneurship has been learning. I love to learn and will continue to do the same

6What message do you have for budding young dentists at crossroads as they read this? Many are worried about their future career prospects as the field is becoming highly competitive and challenging.

• P - Identify your own potential and hidden talents by self-analysing yourself at every step and not comparing with others
• P - Become powerful by gathering knowledge for your field of interest
• C - Keep yourself committed to constant learning
• Remember always: " Slow and Steady wins the race"

7What plans and goals do you have for the future?

To motivate each and every dental student & professional to understand the importance of the interdisciplinary aspect of dental sciences and educate them to explore the pathway towards dental innovations.

8What are your dream projects and aspirational career plans?

To create channels for providing funding for oral healthcare research and supporting new dental start-ups
